A super- simple way to find more customers

This VERY simple tip works. Quite amazingly!

If you’re a bit short of customers and totally short of inspiration for finding some, here’s something to try.

1. Start by making a list of all the people you know. Indeed! A big list. Think as widely as you can – it’s good to get a bit of variety on there. And write the list down. You’re going to need it on paper so you can tick the names off.

2.  You’re going to ask all these people for a wee bit of help. It matters not one jot whether these folk know anything about business or your business. You’ll see why soon. Stick with me, there’s magic in this!

3. The question you are going to ask your ‘list’ is this:

“I think you know I run a small [cake/music/clothing/health] business. Although I’m quite busy I would really like to find a few new customers. Maybe in [new location/new demographic….]. Have you got any suggestions or do you know anyone who would have?”

4. Don’t worry too much about what your [new location/new demographic….] that’s kind of just to help you have the conversation.

5. Right! Start asking your ‘list’! And make sure that you ask your ‘list’ individually – this doesn’t work so well if you ask a group.

6. What happens? Well you’ll find that some people give you a few hopeless ideas, some will give you no ideas at all, a few will think you’re nuts for asking them, a couple will give you some great ideas and a handful will give you names of other people to talk to.

6. Follow up the great ideas and new people to talk to. But that’s not the magic. This is:

By asking your friends for help you will have planted a teeny seed in their mind about your business. From that moment on, whenever they come across someone who-could-just-possibly-need-what-you-sell, that seed will sprout.  Your friend will remember how YOU asked for help and how THEY were unable to give it. And they’ll spot this person, who-could-just- possibly-need-what-you-sell, and your friend will see this as her opportunity to HELP you! At last! Hurrah! And she will seize the moment and tell that someone who-could-just-possibly-need-what-you-sell, all about you!

Indeed! It’s true! It’s a clever little psychological thingo based on the way our funny little human brains are programmed!

    Oooh that’s a great – and challenging tip – Julia!

    At first I said there’s no way I’m doing that. It’s too ‘pushy’ for me.

    But then I realised on Friday, I set a massive goal for my business for the next 12 months. And I promised myself that I was going to do everything I need to do in order to achieve it – and especially all the things I’ve been procrastinating about because they push me outside my comfort zone. And this is one of those things. I’ll report back with my results 🙂
