How to get unstuck

Ever feel like you are standing in a puddle of stuckness?! Oh yes. Me too! If you are, here’s something you might want to try. I call it “What’s in the way?”. It’s super-easy and it *really* helps.

1. Ok, start by thinking of something you’re kinda stuck on. Let’s say it’s redoing your website.

2. Get a piece of paper and *write* down as the title “I’m not doing [the website] because these things are getting in MY way:”

3. Now write the numbers 1-10 down the left side of the paper.

4. Next *write* down TEN things that are getting in the way of YOU doing your [website] project.

5. YES! TEN! It’s very freeing to think of ALL the reasons that are stopping you from getting going. So push yourself to think of ten. If you’re finding it hard to get more than a few, give yourself a couple of days to think about it.  And if you have more than ten, just write them all down!

6. When you’re done, look at your list and pick ONE of the things that’s getting in your way.

7. Now set aside half an hour (with a coffee or a wine!) and *write* down TEN “I coulds” for getting round your problem

8. You can be very imaginative with the “I coulds” because you don’t actually HAVE to do them! They are just COULDs. Quirky, random, realistic, idealistic. Whatever! It doesn’t matter. But the more you come up with the better.

 9. By the time you’ve finished with your ‘I coulds’ you will have thought of something useful you can do! Promise! It sounds too simple to be true but it always works!

10. Now you just need to continue down your list of “What’s getting in my way”. Doing steps 6-9 for each one. But don’t do all your “What’s getting in my way?” at once – that’ll just be overwhelming – one a day works well.

Then you’re done and you should find yourself very unstuck!

PS The *writing* bit is super-important. It’s kinda like the magic. Writing is a fab way of connecting into your subconscious brain (the place where all our REALLY good thoughts are). If you don’t *write* it down you’ll probably only use your conscious brain – and that’s the part that tends to be unimaginative, negative and a bit flakey!
