Why you need to keep a 100 Day Journal

This is the best way in the world to make stuff happen. Really! It’s called a 100 day journal. And it’s easy, it’s fun and it works. HURRAH!
What you do
The slightly tricky part of keeping a 100 day journal is working out your 100 day goal so some tips on that below! Here’s how to do the rest of it:
1. Start by buying a nice small journal that’s got about 100 pages in it. Nice is important! If your journal looks good you’ll want to write in it!
2. Decide the end day for your 100 day goal.
3. Set your 100 day goal (see below)
4. Write your 100 day goal inside the front cover of your journal
5. Now, every day, write down the work you have done that day towards achieving your goal. So if your 100 day goal is to sell 1000 jars of jam, you might write that you spoke to three local shops about stocking your product.
6. And every day write down your progress towards your goal. So if you sold 10 jars you’d write down sales 10!
7. You might also like to keep a running tally of progress towards your goal. In that case every day you’d write down how many jars you’ve sold to date + the number you sold today.
And that’s it! Easy hey?!
To make this work though you really need to write in your journal every day. That’s Every Single Day. [If you have a day off work just write “day off”]. And no backdating your diary entries! That doesn’t work either!
Tips for working out your 100 day goal
1. Give yourself a bit of thinking time to work out your goal. Not ‘cos it’s tricky but because you want to make sure it’s something you really want to achieve!
2. Start by working out the end date for your 100 day goal.
3. Think about what you’d be proud to have achieved by your end date. Write a few different options down. Which one excites you most?
4. Make your goal something measurable. That way you can track your progress AND you’ll know when you’ve achieved it!
5. If you’re short on inspiration, sales figures make good 100 day goals!
Why do 100 Day Journals work?
I’ve been keeping 100 day journals for a couple of years now. I’m always a bit surprised that they work. But they do. They really do!
Here’s a few reasons why they work so well!
1. Writing in your journal every day makes you think about your goal every day. And thinking about your goal kinda makes you DO something about it.
2. Setting your 100 day goal gives you something tangible to work towards and focus on.
3. The human brain likes period of 100 days because it’s a long enough time to make real progress without it being so long that you don’t feel any urgency to start!
4. Writing your journal every day helps you think about whether the actions you’re taking to achieve your goal are working. It doesn’t matter if they’re not. You just need to quickly change tack!
5. It feels good to make progress. And the more progress we see the harder we work! Weird but true!

Love this idea! And I don’t even have to go out and buy a journal – I seem to have plenty of spare notebooks around here! Now to think about my goal…
Haha Tonya – I’m a notebook gal TOO!
This is such a great idea. My “to do” list upon launching my business in a new country is so long and keeps growing daily, including all the personal goals I have. The 100 day journal is the perfect war to deal with my list!! Thank you 🙂
Ooh good luck with all that Melanie! x
